Students Must Learn from Home, But Athletes Can Play – Is This Okay?

Students Must Learn from Home, But Athletes Can Play – Is This Okay?

Joe’s Perspective: As part of my job, I talk with teachers and coaches all over the country. In places like Maryland and Washington, almost all kids are home (virtual learning) and almost all sports are cancelled. In places like Idaho and Florida, almost all students are in school and sports are being played. However, in some states, students are not allowed to learn in the classroom, yet report to practices and play sports.

For example, my daughter’s school just went to all virtual learning and yet the soccer, football and volleyball teams are playing in the state playoffs.  This decision strikes me funny. To me, if it’s not safe enough to learn together, it shouldn’t be safe enough to play together.  There is less ability to socially distance on the field than in the classroom. I try to understand the science in this decision, but I am left scratching my head.

Your Turn: Given everything you know about Covid, do you think kids should be learning in the classroom and do you believe students should be playing sports? Explain.

  1. I think student athletes want to play then they would do what it takes. It’s not their choice to do virtual school but some kids choose to do it anyways. I am not sure

  2. I think both athletes and student should be able to play and learn in person. As long as the precautions are set up, keeping everyone safe. This is because athletes live to play their sport and don’t want it taken away. Some students on the other hand have trouble learning online so this is just an accommodation for the students as well.

  3. i do believe that some student athletes are taking precautions and doing virtual so that it doesn’t jeopardize their sports season.

    1. I feel that students and athletes should be able to do stuff in person because everybody can be safe if there are measures set up to protect them.

  4. Student athletes are doing whatever it takes to be able to play and if that means going virtual that is there choice to make and should be okay.

  5. I think learning in the classroom puts more students at risk of getting the virus so I think it’s good we are going virtual

    1. I think that it’s better if students stay home and athletes can still play, because being a student is not a hobie, it’s not the most fun thing in this world to them. But being an athlete is the most fun you’ll ever have in life long-term.

  6. I think it’s just about reducing exposure and if students go to school and do sports that just adds more unnecessary risk.

  7. I believe the kids should really think about it. I also believe that they should have the opportunity to return to school and play sports.

  8. I believe that students should be able to play sports because at least then it is only the teams and not the entire school together.

  9. I am a firm believer in giving ALL students the option to learn online, and should be given the same option to play their sport of choice. In my mind it is unfair to cancel some sports while others still play, as well as to cancel sports all together- as high school seniors are not given their last year to play. COVID is not going away so I believe our sports should not be taken away.

  10. Yes I believe that students should be able to go to school and play sports because if we can go out to eat then we can go to school.

  11. I think since the choice is available it’s better to choose online but if someone really wants to play sports then they can with precautions.

  12. If you look at your situation and you believe the reward outweighs the risk then you should go to school and sports, but the option should be open

  13. I think students should have the option to be in person, or online.
I also believe sports should continue. The athletes are aware of the risks, as well as receive many screenings and checks for their health.

  14. I’m not fully sure. I guess it depends on the person and what they are doing to take precautions for Covid. If your activity of choice can’t be done while at home than you should have the choice to go to the class, provided that there are measures taken to increase safety.

  15. I believe they should go back to school and play sports as well. Most kids would rather learn in person, and like to play sports because it’s a bonding experience and a way to keep friends.

  16. i do believe that some student athletes are taking precautions and doing virtual so that it doesn’t jeopardize their sports season.

  17. I think kids should have the option to learn in in school or online. I think sports should be played but with precautions.

  18. People should be able choose whether they are in school or not but more affective and better teaching comes from in school. The chances of death or sevre damage is very low.

  19. I think that LISD has the right idea by making in person school an option so that people who are afraid of going to school or are at high risk can stay at home and not get infected. And sports should go on but couches should keep a close watch on there athletes and check for symptoms regularly.

  20. I feel it is up to the person to make that decision, but I feel if the school takes the sports away then some of the lower income families might not have a chance to get scholarships and go to college.

  21. For how the world is alrwady progressing and how the covid mandate is slowly allowing people back in person, I believe that people have the righr to do both in person and play sports in person, if one group gets to do it, it is kind of hard to isolate one group.

  22. I think that athletes should be able to play because it is a smaller group than a whole school. Coaches can create social distancing regulations with a small group. It is easier to contact trace and maintain a smaller group than 1,000 or more students. Practice is a more controlled environment where as when the whole school community meets it could be more risky.

  23. I believe in situations where it is not completely safe enough to go back to classes in person, as long as it is safe enough for athletics it should be aloud.

  24. I think every place is different because covid cases change from location to location. My school is doing a hybrid schedule with sports, which I think makes sense. Not everyone will be together at school, and the sports teams are generally smaller groups of people. Still, in our practices, we aim to keep social distancing and wear masks when we aren’t exercising.

  25. I think that while it is up to the athlete’s school, both are really important for growth as people and athletes. For many kids, school and sports are an escape and I don’t think that it is fair to take that away from the students.

  26. Sadly i have a sport to commit to. I tried online learning but the stress of it was to much. COVID is a disease that is more deadly then the regular flu, because it tricks your Omine system to killing its own white blood cells. Depending on how bad you have it, it could be deadly. I am glad my sport jasent shut down because it is hanging on a thread. My hope is we all stay safe. This is a moral dilemma though. I love my sport and would do anything for my team. I need the practice for competition, but it’s hard to practice when there is Covid in a team sport. Honestly I really don’t know what to do.

  27. I believe that if athletes are going to play their support they will do whatever They have to do in order to play so if in person school or virtual school is what they have to do then they will do it

  28. I think that while it is up to the athlete’s school, both are really important for growth as people and athletes. For many kids, school and sports are an escape and I don’t think that it is fair to take that away from the students.

  29. I understand the frustration with the sports but no school. However, these kids are likely only with their families and their team, therefore they’re only with a limited group on a consistent basis. No one is walking around their school with hundreds of other kids.

  30. I think that athletes should be in person, and think that non-atheletes should be home for school, athletes can’t take such a long time off and be expected to come back and be able to stay up to standards.

  31. I believe they should go back to school and play sports as well. Most kids would rather learn in person, and like to play sports because it’s a bonding experience and a way to keep friends.

  32. I think students should be able to do school in whichever environment keeps them safe and healthy, for some kids they are safer at home and some kids are safer at school. Either way they should always have access to get away from all their worries and stressors and just be able to play the sport they love.

  33. I am still unsure of what I would answer to this but I think that it is certainly a nice thing for athletes to be able to do what they love even in a pandemic, but on the downside it is dangerous and can be viewed as unfair to non-athlete students.

  34. I think that sports and school should be all virtual because if they are not, all that is doing is racking up the COVID cases. It does not make sense to allow sports but not school because the majority of sports are contact sports where you are directly next to someone, if not on them (like football). If anything, school should be allowed and not sports because it is easier to socially distance while at school.

  35. In my personal opinion i feel that all sports should be played with mask and it should be a option to play or not. Most parents would say its not safe or its to much of a risk for their kids to go out there and play. But i don´t think most of the parents understand what sports do for their kids and how much of an impact it does on this generation. This generation needs more sports players and more important people to lead by example. Because most of the kids i know in the inner city try hard to avoid their situation witch sports. And if you take it away it could possibly raise the death rate by a lot. Or have kids loose hope of playing any sports and they give up on their dream because covid stop it.

  36. I think athletes and students should be able to make the choice about both their sports and their schooling. We’re at the age where we should be able understand the risks during these times.

  37. I think people should have the choice to play sports or go to school if they want to and feel comfortable, I don’t think it is the place to tell someone and their family what they can and can’t do especially when it is something this important.
